Formal Writing/Culminating Activity: 100pts Approximate Start Date: The week of March 28th
Formal Writing Task:
After reading the memoirs “from Funny in Farsi” by Firoozeh Dumas and “from Beetles & Angels” by Mawi Asgedom, write an essay in which you compare the authors’ purpose and perspectives. Explain the strategies the authors used in their writing.
In your essay be sure to:
Explain each author’s purpose and perspective Identify the central idea of each text Discuss at least two points of similarities and two points of differences Cite textual evidence to support analysis Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task.
Culminating Activity:
Students will create interview questions and answers that will be asked during an Ellis Island Simulation. Students will create questions about significant aspects of childhood growing up and coming to America. You will share what you learn in a multimedia format with the class.

- Determine an author’s point of view and purpose.
- Explain the strategies authors use to convey their perspective- sarcasm, irony, exaggeration, anecdotes, imagery, and personal reflection.
- Analyze how two authors writing about the same topic shape their ideas differently.
- Analyze how sections of a text contribute to the whole and the development of ideas.

- ~Develop a topic with relevant facts, concrete details, quotations and examples.
- ~Use appropriate transitions to clarify relationships.

- Performance Task / Extended Response:
Analyze the point of view of two authors and how they feel about their mothers. Students will: - Read My Own Two Feet and Bad Boy in which the authors write about themselves and their relationships with their mothers.
- Describe each other’s view of him or herself.
- Describe the author’s relationship with her or his mother.
- Use at least two details from each passage
- Unit Final Exam: 100pts Approximate date: April 1st
~Students will be assessed through multiple choice, short response and extended response questions. Students should review assignments, notes, and feedback in order to prepare for the exam.
